Pearl necklace are crafted from many kinds of pearls. It has its own value among the other best elegant and classic items a woman can wear around her neck. Natural pearl is one among the rarest pearl. A pearl is formed inside the shell of a mollusk. The pearl forms when an irritant, such as a grain of sand, gets trapped in the shell. The mollusk covers the irritant with layers of pearlescent material which eventually form a perfect pearl. Natural pearls are extremely rare and expensive, which is why most people choose cultured pearls.
The vast majority of pearls sold are of the cultured variety. These pearls are just as good as naturally formed pearls, if not better. With cultured pearls, the irritant which causes the formation of the pearl is manually inserted under the mollusk shell by the pearl farmer. The mollusks are raised on what are called farms under strict environmental conditions designed to produce the most favorable result. Within the cultured pearl category is the Japanese cultured pearl, which is smaller and more delicate than the traditional pearl and found in shades of white, cream, rose and gold.
Two other types of cultured pearl are freshwater and saltwater. Freshwater cultured pearls are harvested quickly with twenty or more pearls being grown per mollusk. Saltwater pearls are grown the same way but only one pearl is grown per oyster. Therefore they are more rare and expensive than freshwater pearls are. One of the finest varieties of saltwater pearls are black Tahitian pearls. In addition to black pearls, cultured pearls can be found in delicate shades of lavender, peach, gold, gray, rose and of course the traditional creamy white shade.
Mother of pearl necklaces are also popular. Mother of pearl refers to the opalescent coating inside of a mollusk shell. If a mollusk is capable of producing a pearl it will have the mother of pearl coating on the interior of its shell. This coating is what is applied around the irritant to create the round pearl. Mother of pearl jewelry is often substantially cheaper and more accessible than cultured pearl jewelry. Mother of pearl makes a great gift for any young lady who is interested in fine jewelry but not ready for her first strand of cultured pearls.
